Buy Me Some Peanuts and Veggie Dogs

by Courtnay Glatter on July 26, 2012

It’s the middle of the summer and as the sport that is as American as apple pie, baseball playing is in the air. As a vegetarian or vegan we all know that options can be limited at large events, especially when it comes to crowded venues like a ball park. Well, have no fear; PETA recently took some time out to help both sports and animal lovers out with their list of the top Vegetarian/ Vegan Ball Parks across the nation. Now you no longer have to munch on stale cracker jacks and just peanuts. Get ready to watch your team and eat like a real fan too.

The nation’s first capital came in at number one in another category when PETA called it the most vegan and vegetarian friendly option. Citizens Bank Park located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is home to the Philadelphia Phillies and was named the best option for those that avoid animal products. Not only did PETA rank it number one but it has been ranked number one for three years in a row for being the best vegetarian ball park around our great country. Vegetarian Options include The Poppy wrap or hoagie, The Vedura Vegetarian Wrap, The Vedura Salad, The Poppy Salad, Garden Salads, The Vegetarian Black Bean Burger and a Vegan Hot Dog.

Our next field is rooted in Seattle, Washington, a city that is no stranger to catering to animal lovers. Safeco Field is home to the Seattle Mariners and seats more than 15,000 people. The vegetarian options include a vegetarian Panini, side salads, an assortment of bagels, chips and guacamole, chips and salsa, garlic fries, fish and chips, salmon Caesar salad, and even an entire vegetarian station called All-American Vegetarian. The possibilities seem to be endless in Seattle and they are sure to impress any vegan or vegetarian hungry for more than just another inning.

Another ball park that scored high rankings was located in my home base of New York. The New York Mets’ Citi Field earned a high mark from PETA for bringing out for the vegans and vegetarians. The Acela Club has a whole market item menu located for vegetarians; the course is made up of goodies like poached spring asparagus, pickled mushrooms and hazelnut bread. Even Brooklyn Burger makes vegetarian burgers and veggie dogs, so you don’t feel exiled as your pack of carnivore friends munch on their cheeseburgers. Café Roma boasts a harvest veggie double burger served with kettle cooked chips. While you’re walking on the healthier side of life you can also sip Bethany Frankel’s Skinny Girl Cocktails and not ruin your summer beach bod at all.

As most seasoned vegans and vegetarians know, it always takes a little planning when it comes to big events. At a recent concert in New Jersey, I know my food options were limited to cavity causing sugary candy and peanuts in the shell (so difficult). Luckily, for sports fans the industry is making it a little easier for everyone to enjoy the animated atmosphere that a game day brings.
